Acceptable Use Policy   Top

You must agree to abide by this acceptable use policy to join and remain a member of this mailing list. These common-sense rules are for everyone's protection. By confirming your subscription, you indicate your agreement to abide by this policy.

  • The list moderator reserves the right to suspend or remove any member at any time.
  • The list owner and moderators are not responsible for any content posted here. Each individual member is responsible for the content they post.
  • Copyrighted material must not be posted unless permission has been obtained from the copyright holder. Hyperlinks to other online resources are acceptable and do not require permission, provided the content is not linked in a way that misrepresents the source of the content.
  • All material posted to this list shall be placed in the public domain and will be freely accessible to others, without restriction.
  • E-mail addresses that generate non-delivery reports will be automatically unsubscribed.
  • Acceptable topics for discussion include:
    • Meade 'Advanced Products'
    • telescopes
    • accessories
    • tools
    • techniques
    • hints and tips
    • related materials
  • Unacceptable content includes:
    • commercial content
    • spam
    • malware, virus and spyware
    • defamatory remarks
    • flame wars
    • personal attacks
    • any material that does not meet normal standards of taste and decency, as judged by the moderator.
    • Signature blocks may contain links to commercial content provided the commercial content is not the primary purpose of the message, they are discrete and unobtrusive and the target of the link is not disguised in any way.
  • Please use good netiquette at all times: http://www.google.com/search?q=netiquetteee
    • Post in mixed case. All capitals is considered abusive.
    • When replying to a thread, please only quote the portions of the original message that are relevant. Including the whole email is considered sloppy and bad mannered.
    • Don't change the subject line when replying to a message (this makes it harder to view message threads on some software). If a subject change is needed, start from a fresh, blank email with a new subject line.
    • Before you post the first time, realize that your inquiry, such as what accessories to get, whether you need a wedge for astrophotography, what aperture/f-ratio is best, etc., has likely been discussed before (maybe many times). Therefore, please visit the Mapug-Astronomy Topical Archive, available at <http://www.mapug-astronomy.net/> and check to see if the information you need is already available. There is a search engine on the homepage that not only searches the Topical Archive, but also another wonderful Mapug related site called Doc G's Info Site. Combined these two sites have a vast store (nearly 330 pages & 800,000 words accumulated from discussions since 1997!) of information about Meade advanced products, especially the LX200 scopes.
    • Don't use attachments such as jpg images as many members are on slow dial-up connections. Rather upload your images to a website and then include the link in your post. If you don't have a website, then post a request for a member to host your images for viewing.

    Subject: Why Not a Digest?

    From: Tim Long, list administrator <Tim_at_long-family.com>

    Simple answer: no. The software in use doesn't support digests and probably never will.

    Long answer (which is purely academic since the software doesn't support digests)....

    The lack of digests might sound like a limitation but actually you don't really gain anything by having a digest. In fact, what you gain in reducing the number of emails you receive is at the expense of a massive amount of flexibility - here are a few I can think of off the top of my head:

    • The ability to filter, search and sort the messages in anything other than strict chronological order;
    • Ignore posters that you're not interested in or highlight senders that you pay more attention to;
    • To colourize messages based on various criteria;
    • The ability to arrange the messages into 'threads' based on the topic of conversation;
    • Access to the unique message headers of each message
    • Easy to reply with the correct subject without breaking the message threading
    • Ability for the sender to use HTML or plain text

    I'm sure that anyone who's accustomed to receiving a digest will find the new way of working, but trust me - there is no advantage to a digest given the capabilities of modern email clients. Outlook 2003, for example, is amazingly flexible in the different ways email can be processed and displayed. I'm sure other clients do a good job too. My contention is that there is simply no need for digests any more. This is just my opinion, others are free to disagree.
