Unsubscribing from the regular version of the old Mapug.com list

(If you prefer to use Majordomo commands, click here.)

To unsubscribe, make sure your request is addressed to: <mapug-request@shore.net> NOT <mapug@shore.net> (mail sent here is forwarded to the list members!). Then, in the main body.. NOT in the subject, type only the one word:
    UNSUBSCRIBE

*If your browser insists on a Subject line, it's OK to put something like unsubscribe there.

For additional help see the Troubleshooting Guide below. If you need to get in contact with the list owner, (e.g., if you have trouble unsubscribing) send an email to John Hopper to the address below: John Hopper <sales@astrobuffet.com>, MAPUG.com list administrator

Subscribing or Unsubscribing to the new Mapug-Astronomy.net list

To subscribe to the new list, send a blank email to <MAPUG-subscribe@mapug-astronomy.net> from the email address you wish to receive list messages.  Doesn't matter what you put in the Subject line or body. Note: there is no digest version available.

To unsubscribe, send a blank email to: <MAPUG-unsubscribe@mapug-astronomy.net>  Doesn't matter what you put in the Subject line or body but the email must be sent from the original subscribing address. If this is not possible, then send an email to <supporta_tmapug-astronomy.net> with the original email address you wish unsubscribe. Unsubscribe Troubleshooting Guide from the old Mapug.com list

Common Problems:

1) The following error is returned when the command was placed in the "Subject" area of the message instead of the "Body".

>>>> Subject: unsubscribe **** Command 'subject:' not recognized. >>>> **** No valid commands found. **** Commands must be in message BODY, not in HEADER.

2) The following error is returned when the command is not spelled correctly.

>>>> unsusbscribe **** Command 'unsusbscribe' not recognized.

3) The following error is returned when the requested address is not a list member. Your request must arrive from the SAME mail address that your MAPUG.com mail is sent to. In the example below my MAPUG.com mail is sent to <jrippey@radiks.net> but my unsubscribe request was sent from my work email address jrippey*test.com. In some cases you can change the return address your mail is "from". This varies by email and network.

>>>> unsubscribe

**** unsubscribe: '"Jim Rippey" <jrippey@test.com>' is not a member of list mapug.com

3a) Most unsubscribe problems are caused by the unsubscribe request being sent from an address other than the subscribed address. A typical example is someone subscribed as <johndoe@email.msn.com> where the ISP changed to just using <johndoe@msn.com> without the person realizing the impact, because the ISP forwards email from the old address to the new address. This affects lurkers only, because the ability to post disappears at the same time as the ability to unsubscribe yourself.

The first private email I get from people who like to post is usually "Why can't I post anymore?" or "I think the list is broken, I see everyone's posts but my own." and the first message I get from habitual lurkers is typically "Why can't I unsubscribe?"

If these steps don't unsubscribe you, then try the following:

Instructions for Using Commands to Majordomoa_tshore.net

You can interact with the Majordomo software by sending it commands in the body of mail messages addressed to <majordomo@shore.net>. Please do not put your commands on the Subject line; Majordomo does not process commands in the Subject line. If your email software requires somethiing in the Subject line, it doesn't hurt.

You may put multiple Majordomo commands in the same mail message. Put each command on a line by itself.

If you use a "signature block" at the end of your mail, Majordomo may mistakenly believe each line of your message is a command; you will then receive spurious error messages. To keep this from happening, either put a line starting with a hyphen ("-") before your signature, or put a line with just the word:

end

on it in the same place. This will stop the Majordomo software from processing your signature as bad commands.

Here are some of the things you can do using Majordomo:

UNSUBSCRIBING FROM MAILING LISTS--

Your original intro message contains the exact command which should be used to remove your address from the list. However, in most cases, you may simply send the command "unsubscribe" followed by the list name:

unsubscribe mapug.com

(This command may fail if your provider has changed the way your address is shown in your mail.)

To remove an address other than the one from which you're sending the request, give that address in the command:

unsubscribe mapug1 myemailname@my-isp.com

The message is being sent from <stargazer1@stargazer.net> to unsubscribe <deepspace@netzero.net>. The "end" command is included because a signature is added automatically by the email server. The word "unsubscribe" is in the Subject line, but means nothing to Majordomo.

In either of these cases, you can tell <majordomo@shore.net> to remove the address in question from all lists on this server by using "*" in place of the list name:

unsubscribe *

unsubscribe * myemailname@my-isp.com
